## Acclimatisation

The hardening step that moves a vitroplant out of sterile, humid in-vitro conditions into a greenhouse, so it survives open air and ordinary humidity before shipment.

## Biochar

A porous, carbon-rich material made by heating organic matter with little oxygen. Used as a soil amendment for its porosity and persistence, though quality and price vary widely between sources.

## Cation-exchange capacity (CEC)

A soil's ability to hold positively charged nutrient ions — potassium, calcium, magnesium, ammonium — on negatively charged mineral surfaces instead of losing them to percolating water. A low-CEC soil leaks applied nutrients; a higher-CEC one retains and releases them gradually as the soil solution is depleted.

## Controlled trial

A trial run under managed conditions against an untreated control, used for a first measurement of an effect. It is a starting point, not a substitute for a field trial: Hydrobio's headline figures come from controlled trials and are still to be confirmed in independent field trials.

## EU Regulation 2019/1009

The European Union's regulation on fertilising products. It sets the conformity assessment — the homologation dossier — a soil amendment must pass before it can be sold across the EU under the CE mark. Hydrobio's dossier is in preparation; homologation has not been granted.

## Field trial

An independent trial run on working farms, on soils the developer did not select, across enough seasons to test whether a result measured in a controlled trial holds outside it.

## Hydrobio

KUZOG's soil amendment: a hybrid mineral-biological product combining a micronised mineral matrix, which holds water and nutrients, with a living mycorrhizal consortium that extends the root system. It is not a synthetic hydrogel or superabsorbent polymer — the water retention comes from mineral pore structure and biology, not a swelling polymer. One application is intended to last three to five years.

## In-vitro culture

Growing plant tissue in sterile, nutrient-controlled conditions inside a vessel rather than in soil. It is the base technique behind micropropagation, meristem culture and mother-plant conservation.

## Jeune Entreprise Innovante (JEI)

A French statutory tax status for small companies that spend a defined share of their costs on research and development. It is a threshold in the tax code that a company either clears or does not — not an award, a label or a jury decision.

## Lot traceability

Identifying and documenting each production lot from culture initiation to shipment, so a delivered batch of plants can be traced back to its mother plant and production history.

## Meristem culture

Sanitising a plant variety by culturing only the apical dome of a shoot tip — the small zone of actively dividing cells that mature, virus-carrying vascular tissue has not yet reached — so the resulting plantlet outgrows an infection already present in the mother plant.

## Micronisation

Grinding a mineral to a very fine, controlled particle size (on the order of 10 microns). Because soil chemistry happens at surfaces, micronising a mineral to that size can present on the order of 200 times more surface area to the soil solution than the same mass unground.

## Micropropagation

Multiplying a plant by growing many identical copies of it in sterile, in-vitro culture rather than from seed or cutting. It does not alter the plant's genetic makeup, so it is not a form of genetic modification.

## Microplantes

KUZOG's in-vitro plant laboratory. It multiplies disease-free, true-to-type young plants (vitroplants) by micropropagation, at a target capacity of approximately up to 10 million vitroplants a year.

## Mother plant

The selected, sanitary source plant that every vitroplant in a production lot is multiplied from. Its health and identity set the ceiling for everything produced downstream, which is why both selection and sanitation start here.

## Mycorrhizae

A symbiosis between plant roots and soil fungi: the fungus sends fine threads into soil pores far narrower than a root hair can enter, acquiring water and poorly mobile nutrients such as phosphorus in exchange for plant carbon — effectively extending the root system into more soil.

## PCT extension

Filing under the Patent Cooperation Treaty to extend a single patent application's priority date into the process of seeking protection in multiple countries, rather than filing separately in each one.

## Soil organic matter

The decomposed plant and animal material in soil. It raises water-holding capacity and cation-exchange capacity, but — unlike a single mineral application — the gain is lost if the practice that built it (compost, cover crops, reduced tillage) stops.

## Superabsorbent polymer (hydrogel)

A synthetic polymer that swells by absorbing many times its own weight in water, sometimes used as a soil amendment for water retention. Its gain is typically fast but fades with salinity and repeated wetting cycles. Hydrobio is not this: it is a mineral-biological amendment, not a synthetic hydrogel — see the Hydrobio entry.

## Thermotherapy

Holding a plant at an elevated temperature before meristem culture, to slow a virus's spread relative to the plant's own growth and improve the odds that the excised shoot tip is clean.

## True-to-type

A claim that a multiplied plant is genetically identical to the mother plant it was taken from. Micropropagation supports this claim because it copies tissue rather than crossing genes.

## USPTO patent application

A patent application filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Filed means the application has been submitted and is under examination — it is not the same as a granted patent, and this site names which one applies at every mention.

## Viral indexing

Laboratory testing of a plant lot for the major viruses known to affect that species before it leaves production, so 'virus-free' is a tested claim rather than an assumption from a healthy appearance.

## Vitroplant

A young plant produced by in-vitro culture from a fragment of a selected mother plant. It is sanitised against major viruses and genetically identical to the mother stock it was taken from.

## Water-holding capacity (réserve utile)

The share of water a soil can hold in its pores at a tension plant roots can still overcome. A sandy soil's pores are wide, so most of a rainfall or irrigation event drains below the root zone before roots draw from it: the parcel is short of storage, not of water.
